“Knock…Just Knock….Why isn’t she knocking?….. Do you think she even knows how to knock?” This is one of my favorite quotes from Olaf in the movie Frozen. Anna was standing timidly at her sister’s door not sure if her sister would even be welcoming to her.
Ask, Seek, Knock
Sometimes knocking on doors can be a scary thing! Especially if we do not know what the door might open up to. In the Bible we read:
“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened” (Matthew 7:7-8 NKJV).
Recently, in my growth group at church, the progression of this verse was pointed out to me. We should ask for the things that we desire, seek God’s will, and then knock.
Don’t Get Stuck At Seek…
I feel like a lot of times we get stuck at seek. Maybe we don’t completely understand what it means to seek. We think, “okay, I asked God for what I want and now I just have to wait for Him to send me a sign. So we wait, and wait, and wait. We forget that God also wants us to knock. Throughout my life, I felt that it wasn’t my job to go out and work for opportunities. I thought it was more scriptural to just simply seek God and allow Him to bring whatever He wanted to bring. With this mindset, I was getting nowhere. I did not reach many people.

Just Knock…
Whatever it is you are asking and seeking for you have to be brave enough to knock on the doors of opportunity that are presented. I think we miss this step because man is it scary! For one thing, we do not know if the door will open.
Closed Doors?
Wait doesn’t the verse say to knock and the door will be opened to you? Yes but what door? Sometimes the door leads us to knock on another door of opportunity.
“A closed door is not a rejection it is a redirection.” (click to tweet)
It tells us to try a different door. We do not learn God’s will through a sign. We learn God’s will from seeking His will and then knocking on doors that are in line with His will. Only God knows what door we need opened. Psalms 37:4 states,
“Delight yourself also in the Lord, and he shall give you the desires of your heart.” (NKJV).
There! God’s going to give me what I want right? That is not exactly what the verse says. It says that God will give us the desires of our hearts. Check out Jeremiah 17:9-10 which states,
“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it? I, the Lord search the heart, I test the mind, Even to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings.” (NKJV).
Don’t be afraid.
Only God knows the deep desires of our hearts. That is what he gives us! What our heart needs may not always be what we think it needs. This is I think another reason we get stuck at seek. We are afraid of finding what is on the other side of the doors. Matthew 7:9-11 gives us some reassurance to help us get past our fear of knocking.
“Or what man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him?” (NKJV).
Although we may not know what is on the other side of the door, we can have the assurance that it will be an awesome gift from an awesome God!
