What do we do with times like these? Many of our distractions, our confidences have been stripped away. We have nothing left to hide behind. What do we do with this vulnerability? What do we do with seeing ourselves as we truly are – hopeless and in need, out of control and frightened? Do we drown out those feelings with lots of activity or do we humbly surrender to the one who is in control? Our calendar has been cleared. What do we do with all this time? Vulnerability plus time can lead to the growth of more numbing habits or it can lead to a time of healing and growth. What am I choosing?
It’s so easy do we miss it?
Many times in the Bible we see the Israelites caught in vulnerable situations asking, “What do we do?” The answer was always simple; humble yourself, seek God, and pray. I feel like sometimes that is too simple. It’s hard to see the power in simple everyday actions, but God in his love has made it easy for us to come to Him. He lovingly beckons to us in Matthew 11:28-30
Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
Is it so easy and gentle that sometimes we miss it? Are we like Naaman looking for big extravagant ways to show our faith and missing what God is calling us to do? (2 Kings 5:1-14)
What an opportunity!
What an opportunity this time presents for us to open up our Bibles and turn back to God, to build our faith, to find healing, to reflect, and to refocus. While a lot of things are out of our control right now, there is one thing that is always in our control-our choice. What do we choose to do with a time like this?
